Okay everyone, I think it's always good to have some ground rules for constructive workshop progress. First off, everything posted here should be something that you are willing as a writer to allow us to pull apart. Even the best writing has to be broken down to its simplest form before it can really shine. We all write crap to start with, gold happens in the revision process.
So, with that being said.
Rule 1. Always give your honest impression, but remember that your opinion might only be based on your personal preference. So be kind, it takes a lot of guts to share your work openly.
2. Give a good critique of what the writing is trying to accomplish, regardless of your personal opinions. Not everyone likes every style, but that does not make it bad writing. So, try and see what the author is going for, and give good feedback on whether that works or not.
3. Offer up some advice or ideas on how to make it better. Make sure to point out areas of strength and weakness, and make sure to offer some suggestions on how to round the piece out.
4. Try not to take anything personally. If you feel that the feedback is wrong, you have creative license to dismiss it entirely! You are the author, and you must hold to your convictions! But, if everyone is saying the same things, then maybe there might be something that needs to change.
5. If you are posting the piece simply because you want someone to edit it behind you, then please state that at the beginning. This way we all know not to focus so much on the critique aspect and more on the grammatical.
Overall, though, have fun with it! Writing and sharing your writing is supposed to be a creative process that we all love! This whole forum is a little hippie and a little business, but always with the intent of making us better at our craft!
